William John Currey and Aaron John Leslie Bunt charged with murder of Len Andrew Hegarty

A lawyer for the 32-year-old Oakey man, who has been held in custody since charged with murder in December 2021, claimed in court they were still waiting for police to disclose evidence, two years on from the alleged attack.

Almost two years after being charged with murder a Toowoomba man’s legal team is still seeking material from police.

Oakey man William John Currey, 32, and Aaron John Leslie Bunt, 29, of North Toowoomba, were each charged in December 2021 with murder arising from the death of 53-year-old Len Andrew Hegarty whose body was found in a Ruthven St house in the lead-up to Christmas 2021.

Police claim Mr Hegarty had been assaulted and died of his injuries.

Neither accused man has as yet been required to enter any pleas to the charges arising from the incident and no details of the case have as yet been put before an open court.

Both accused men have remained in custody since their respective arrests.

Mr Currey was not required to be in Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Thursday when his case was mentioned but was represented by his solicitor Hamish Chapman of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Legal Service’s Toowoomba office.

Mr Chapman said an application for a court hearing to rule on the defence seeking further disclosure of evidence by police had been filed with the court Thursday morning.

Magistrate Kay Philipson remanded Mr Currey in custody and adjourned the case for a hearing on Mr Chapman’s application for disclosure of further police evidence to be heard in the same court on September 14.

Mr Bunt’s case was scheduled to return to the same court on September 11 when a defence application for cross examination of certain witnesses at a pre-trial committal hearing is to be heard.
