Two young men charged with attempted murder, after an elderly Toowoomba man was seriously injured with an axe during an alleged home invasion, had their cases mentioned before a Magistrate.
Eliah John Bligh, 18, and Denzel Morris Neville Hinch, 19, were charged with a raft of offences in November after spending weeks on the run following the alleged tomahawk attack.
The pair allegedly continued to commit violent property offences during that period of time.
On Tuesday, February 20, almost four months after the man was rushed to hospital in a serious but stable condition, the Toowoomba Magistrates Court was provided with an update on the cases.
The court heard each of the men’s lawyers had yet received the entire brief of evidence, and forensic material, which included fingerprints.
The Queensland Police Service released images of the pair to the public in an attempt to expedite their arrests following the alleged Rockville home invasion on October 18, 2023.
Police said the 68-year-old man was preparing breakfast for his wife about 6am, when he was allegedly confronted by the armed intruders.
He was taken to Toowoomba Hospital with chest lacerations following a confrontation.
The pair fled the Trousdell St home, and police allege days later Hinch and Bligh tried to carjack multiple people at Harlaxton while armed with a meat cleaver, a knife, and an axe.
On a different occasion, police allege Hinch broke into a Toowoomba home on Hill St, and assaulted a man while armed with a piece of wood.
Hinch was charged with 31 offences which included, attempted murder, entering a home and committing crimes, stealing cars, stealing, assault occasioning bodily harm while armed and in company, attempting to enter a dwelling to commit a crime, attempted robbery with violence while armed in company, attempted robbery with actual violence, and receiving a stolen gun or ammunition.
Bligh was charged with seven offences, which included attempted murder, stealing cars, entering a home with intent, and attempting to enter a home to commit a crime.
The case will next be mentioned before the court on April 2.
