TYRONE Edwin Delaney was sentenced to six years behind bars for a violent home invasion where he stormed a Toowoomba residence alongside five others and armed with machetes.

Despite overwhelming evidence of his involvement in the terrifying crime, Delaney denied he had been at the Hursley Road residence during the robbery on August 6, 2020.

Told by police that DNA from blood found on a lounge room light switch had been matched to him, Delaney claimed he had been at the house three weeks earlier to buy cannabis from a 15-year-old boy who lived at the home, Toowoomba District Court heard.

Crown prosecutor Ellen Fletcher told the court three teenagers had been at home when a group of up to six people arrived and forced their way in.

While a young woman fled the house, two other teenagers remained and were subjected to violence including one being attacked with a machete resulting in a number of wounds which required hospital treatment, she said.

Property from the house was stolen including the injured man's wallet and mobile phone, the court heard.

The armed intruders were disguised and wore masks and made demands for cash and drugs, Ms Fletcher said.

One of the accused men eventually owned up to his role in the frightening home invasion and confessed to being the one armed with the machete, Ms Fletcher said.

He was due to be sentenced in January after a number of reports were done, she said.

However, Delaney maintained his innocence, telling the court he remembered that day as he had smashed his mobile phone screen and he had been at home asleep in bed.

The residents said they did not know Delaney and the now 16-year-old boy said he had never been involved in cannabis as Delaney claimed.

Delaney pleaded not guilty to burglary in the night, two counts of armed robbery in company, and armed robbery in company and wounding.

However, after three hours of deliberations, the jury returned guilty verdicts on all charges.

Judge Deborah Richards sentenced Delaney to six years in jail but ordered he be eligible to apply for release on parole as of September 18, 2023.
