A 30-year-old Toowoomba parolee has been returned to jail after a dangerous pursuit along the Warrego Highway, in which he drove directly at a police vehicle.
Travis Peter Holborn was on parole for similar offending when he was seen speeding and crossing onto the wrong side of the Warrego Highway in a stolen car on August 8, Toowoomba Magistrates Court heard.
On a number of occasions he was seen to cross over double white lines in the Toyota HiLux, which was reported stolen from a Laidley residence earlier that day.
About 8.30am Holborn drove the HiLux directly at a police vehicle on Stone Gully Road in Coolana, forcing officers to swerve to avoid a collision, police prosecutor Anita Page said.
A police helicopter was called to track the ute as it drove along the Warrego Highway toward Toowoomba.
The HiLux was later abandoned on Sixth Ave in Harristown.
Holborn and another person got into a black Toyota Rav 4 with two other occupants, with Holborn driving that vehicle.
PolAir tracked them as the Rav 4 drove through three red traffic lights before driving into the Grand Central car park.
Holborn was eventually found by police hiding in the storage room of Target, Ms Page said.
The 30-year-old was arrested and returned to jail.
He appeared in court by video link from jail and pleaded guilty to eight offences including two counts of dangerous driving, disqualified driving, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, driving an unregistered and uninsured car, and possessing a Xanax tablet without a prescription.
Defence solicitor Chelsea Saldumbide, of McConnell Saldumbide Lawyers, told the court her client endured a difficult childhood and was on the streets since from age 12.
She said he also battled a longstanding drug problem.
Ms Saldumbide said Holborn instructed “he was over prison” and wanted to change his life and become a good husband and father.
Magistrate Clare Kelly took into account the 93 days Holborn spent back in custody after his arrest.
Ms Kelly sentenced Holborn to 15 months in jail but ordered he be eligible to apply for parole on April 8, 2023.
He was also disqualified him from driving for six years.
