Police officers found a prisoner’s stash of cannabis while conducting an early morning cell check becuase they spotted a young man sleeping in faeces.

Toowoomba Magistrates Court was told the 19-year-old, Sheldon William Brown, was sentenced to a 12 month jail term on January 19 after he pleaded guilty to a wild crime spree.

Police prosecutor Anita Page said on January 21, officers found six grams of weed wrapped in a package in Brown’s cell.

“It was noted there were faeces on a blue blanket the defendant was using and it was covering him,” she said.

“Police have shined a torch and observed there was an item concealed in the top corner of the bed between the wall and cushion near (his) head.”

The court heard police took the small package of weed, and when Brown woke he was seen searching the bed.

Magistrate Kay Philipson said she would impose a significant fine as the crime was aggravated by the fact that Brown was in custody.

Brown pleaded guilty to possessing drugs and was fined $1500.
