A Toowoomba man who “wasted” more than five years of his life behind bars for drug related offending has told a court he is ready to end his criminal career and overcome his debilitating ice addiction.

Caige Nathaniel Grant fronted the Toowoomba Supreme Court on Tuesday, April 23, and pleaded guilty to a number of drug offences relating to a raid in early 2023.

The court heard a large quantity of meth was found which Grant sold to fuel his addiction.

At the time, the now 28-year-old was on a suspended sentence and subject to a parole order.

The court heard on April 29, police executed a search warrant at Grant’s home and arrested him on a return to prison warrant which was issued by the parole board due to his noncompliance.

During the raid officers found 7.5g of pure meth, more than 9g of a meth related substance, cannabis, drug related items, and a gel blaster gun.

The court heard during Grant’s arrest a struggle ensued and police twice deployed their tasers.

Barrister Nathan Edridge said while in custody over the past year, Grant went through great efforts to rehabilitate himself and had gained clarity around the relationship between his addiction and offending.

Justice Martin Burns said he did not plan to add to the long list of lectures Grant had likely received and was moved by his self-penned relapse prevention plan.

“As it turns out I need not worry about giving you a lecture, you have come to the realisation yourself,” he said.

“But… the real challenge comes when you are released and you have shown a great talent for being apprehended soon after your release.

“You might be thought to be a hopeless case but that would be a mistake.

“I think there is much hope for you, but there is a great challenge ahead.”

Justice Burns said Grant’s letter went beyond mere words as he had already made strides over the past 307 days to better himself in and outside of prison.

“Since 9 May 2018 you spent 2002 days in custody,” he said.

“You have been guilty over the course of your criminal history of very serious offending, but perhaps your greatest offence is the waste of that many years of your life.”

Grant pleaded guilty to possessing drugs, possessing drug related items and utensils, obstructing police, receiving tainted property, and possessing a restricted item/gel blaster.

The year Grant spent in pre-sentence custody was declared as time served and he was sentenced to a two-year jail term.

His full time release date from prison is January 5, 2028, but he was deemed eligible for release on parole.

Before adjoining the court, Justice Burns returned Grant’s relapse prevention plan and suggested he keep it on him at all times.

The court heard Grant had outstanding charges before the Toowoomba Magistrate Court which he intended to plead guilty to which included assault occasioning bodily harm and the unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

Grant was remanded in custody and the matters were adjured for a guilty plea on Wednesday, April 23.
