A convicted drug trafficker was out of jail on parole for just six weeks when he returned to dealing drugs.

Caige Nathaniel Grant had been sentenced in the Toowoomba Supreme Court to a total four-and-a-half year jail term in August 2019 after pleading guilty to trafficking dangerous drugs, the same court heard on Thursday.

Because he had served 15 months in pre-sentence custody which couldn’t be declared under that sentence, he was given a sentence of three years and three months, Crown prosecutor Shontelle Petrie told the court.

The now 27-year-old was released from jail on parole on December 16, 2019, but just six weeks later he was back peddling methamphetamine while on parole for trafficking the drug, she said.

Ms Petrie said Grant had trafficked the drug from February 12, 2020, to March 19, 2020, when he was found with more than 2g of methamphetamine when police searched him at Kleinton.

Though it was only a relatively short period of one month and five days, the trafficking had an “intensity to it” with Grant on one occasion selling 17.5g of the drug for $2700, she said.

Grant had spent the ensuing 735 days since his arrest in custody and appeared in court in custody to plead guilty to trafficking methamphetamine and to possessing the drug in a quantity above 2g.

His barrister Steve Kissick said his client had done a number of courses to better himself while in custody.

“It seems he’s making the best he can in custody to prepare for his release,” he said.

When released his client would live in Oakey with his parents who were in court supporting him, he said.

Justice David Boddice sentenced Grant to four years in jail, but ordered he be eligible to apply for release on parole as of May 28, 2022.
