A young Toowoomba mum has been accused of playing a larger role in an alleged drug syndicate operating in the region.

Taylah Maree Callaghan-Watson, 27, appeared via video link before Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Wednesday to apply for bail after allegedly supplying illicit drugs through her mobile phone.

Ms Callaghan-Watson was charged with 41 offences including 33 counts of supplying dangerous drugs, one count of trafficking in dangerous drugs and two counts of possessing dangerous drugs.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Natalie Bugden argued against bail, alleging the young mum of four played a significant role in a larger drug operation.

“Certainly she’s made admissions to police that she herself even has a drug problem,” Sergeant Bugden said.

“But she’s certainly a bigger part of a supply syndicate where she continually utilises her mobile phone to supply drugs and collect debts.”

Sergeant Bugden further argued Ms Callaghan-Watson was at risk of breaching bail conditions and ditching court appearances if granted bail.

“She is someone who has come before the court in the past for drug related offences,” she said.

“She also has breaches of bail and failures to appear littered throughout her history.”

Skuse Graham Criminal Lawyers managing partner Claire Graham said Ms Callaghan-Watson had co-operated with police in a “full and frank” manner since her arrest.

“She engaged in conversation with police about her drug habits, her attempts to curb her addiction, she provided police with a phone number and provided police access to her device,” she said.

“There is certainly no suggestion that she has sought to flee the area or in any other way avoid detection.

“It’s my respectful submission, it’s a matter that can be appropriately addressed with a residential and reporting condition.

Ms Graham also suggested the young woman would provide access to her phone upon police request.

She said Ms Callaghan-Watson had suffered significant family tragedy, amplifying her drug addiction, but had made steps towards recovery, including submitting to a rehabilitation centre.

“She is a person with a drug problem,” Ms Graham said.

“The last few years have been particularly difficult for her.

“She instructs me she hasn’t used drugs for approximately two and a half weeks.”

Magistrate Michelle Dooley refused bail, noting an unacceptable risk of reoffending, failing to appear and potentially interfering with witnesses.

“I take into account the nature and seriousness of the offences, her previous history, the history of previous grants of bail and very importantly the strength of the evidence before the court,” she said.

Ms Callaghan-Watson’s case was adjourned until January 22, 2024.
