Major change in case against man accused of killing Heidi Riding in alleged stolen car crash

Police have indicated they will not pursue a manslaughter case against a man accused of killing a young woman in a fiery car crash.

Recidivist Toowoomba property offender Kyaharlem Hazard has been remanded in custody since police arrested him following a fatal car crash that claimed the life of his friend Heidi Riding, 18, in July 2023.
Recidivist Toowoomba property offender Kyaharlem Hazard has been remanded in custody since police arrested him following a fatal car crash that claimed the life of his friend Heidi Riding, 18, in July 2023.

The manslaughter case against a man accused of killing a young Toowoomba teenager will be dropped after an arduous and lengthy legal stalemate.

Kyaharlem Hazard, 20, was allegedly driving a stolen car at speeds more than 150km/h when he lost control and crashed, killing his 18-year-old passenger Heidi Riding.

He has been remanded in custody since the crash in July of last year with multiple delays in obtaining brief material slowing progression through the court.

On Wednesday, defence solicitor Claire Graham of Skuse Graham Criminal Lawyers indicated to the Toowoomba Magistrates Court the parties had agreed to reduce Mr Hazard’s manslaughter charge to that of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death.

Magistrate Kyna Morice was unable to enact the change immediately, despite police support, as Mr Hazard was not present in the courtroom which is needed by the court.

Once altered, the case will progress to the District Court.

“On that basis, the matter will proceed as a registry committal,” Ms Graham confirmed.

Ms Morice adjourned the matter for one week to organise a video conference with Mr Hazard.

The 20-year-old is further charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle and driving without a licence – disqualified by court order.

It is yet unknown if Mr Hazard will enter a plea at the next appearance on Wednesday November 13, 2024.
