When police asked a Toowoomba woman why she stole $390 worth of Nike duffel bags, the 29-year-old said she had “dipped out”.
Kathryn Lea Barnett fronted the Toowoomba Magistrates Court on April 17 and pleaded guilty to one count of stealing, after police prosecution dropped one charge of entering a premise to commit a crime.
The duty manager of a Toowoomba establishment instructed her solicitor that when she stole the bags from a Grand Central Shopping Centre store, she was struggling with her mental health following a break-up in November.
The court heard just before 9pm on December 14, 2023, staff at Rebel Sport noticed their CCTV detected an intruder in a storeroom nicking several Nike duffel bags.
When police questioned Barnett at her home on January 3, the court heard she told them she committed the crime because she was off her medication and had “dipped out”.
The 29-year-old hospitality worker told the officers she disposed of the bags.
Barnett’s criminal history was tabled to court, which primarily consisted of drug offences, and one charge of dealing with unauthorised shop goods from 2020.
The court heard Barnett had since gotten her life and health back on track, and recently received a promotion at work.
Barnett was fined $200 and ordered to pay $360 in compensation.
No conviction was recorded.
