Stephen David William O’Sullivan ordered off roads for more than two years

The father of two has vowed to turn his life around after crashing a car while driving disqualified and with drugs in his system.

Australia's Court System

A drug driver who crashed his car on a Toowoomba street while hooning was determined to turn his life around and address his issues, the city’s Magistrates Court has heard.

Stephen David William O’Sullivan, 42, was reported to police by a witness who said he’d been doing burnouts and speeding on the streets of Wilsonton about 6.08pm, July 24, last year.

He had driven into Perina St at speed but lost control of the car which mounted the footpath and crashed into the front yard of a house, police prosecutor Bettina Trenear told the court.

A woman attending a party next door approached O’Sullivan’s vehicle and took the keys from the ignition, she said.

Police arrived to find O’Sullivan had been driving while disqualified and that the car was unregistered and uninsured with number plates belonging to another car.

He made full admissions to police including to recent drug use, Ms Trenear said.

O’Sullivan was taken to Toowoomba Hospital where a sample of blood was taken and later analysed which showed he had methamphetamine in his system at the time, she said.

O’Sullivan pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention, driving while disqualified by court order, driving an unregistered and uninsured car, and drug driving.

His lawyer Shane Hough, of RedHill Legal, told the court his client had since realised he had to turn his life around and had been receiving counselling.

His client had turned to drug use after the breakdown of his 17-year marriage some time ago but “he was genuine and sincere in turning his life around”, he said.

Noting he had no criminal history, Magistrate Graham Lee fined O’Sullivan a total $1800 and disqualified him from holding or obtaining a driver’s licence for two years and three months.
