Two years after 61-year-old Krishna Chopra’s body was found inside her Crows Nest home, the investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death is yet to be completed.

Police believe Ms Chopra died of severe head trauma on or about January 21, 2022, some 10 days before her body was found inside her Park Rd home in Crows Nest.

Her son-in-law Simon Jones, 33, was ultimately charged with murder arising from Ms Chopra’s death and was initially held in custody until his solicitor Nathan Bouchier and barrister Frank Martin successfully applied to the Supreme Court to release their client on bail last year.

Mr Jones remains on that Supreme Court bail and was not required to be in Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Thursday, January 25, when his case was mentioned.

Mr Bouchier told the court he believed most of the police brief of evidence had been disclosed but Mr Martin had instructed that the defence could not decide which course to take until all the DNA evidence was made available.

When the case was mentioned before the same court in June 2023, police prosecutor Anita Page advised that there had been delays associated with the government laboratory which eventually led to a Commission of Inquiry into forensic DNA testing in Queensland which ultimately led to DNA samples from thousands of cases having to be retested.

Ms Page told the same court on Thursday that the laboratory advised it had taken receipt of a further 48 exhibits from police in relation to the Chopra case just last month and it could not give an estimate as to when the DNA testing would be complete.

Mr Bouchier submitted that given his client was now on bail he would not object to another adjournment.

Magistrate Clare Kelly noted that Mr Jones’ case had been before the Magistrates Court since March 2022 and because it was delayed in that court it would be further delayed in getting to the Supreme Court which dealt with cases of murder.

Ms Kelly acknowledged Mr Jones was on Supreme Court bail and adjourned the case for mention back in the same court on March 21.
