A repeat car thief busted with contraband between his buttocks has recorded 13 stolen car offences in almost a year, a court has been told.

Brody Scott Thompson, 19, pleaded guilty before the Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Tuesday July 9 to 10 charges including two unlawful uses of a motor vehicle, three counts of stealing and one charge of possessing dangerous drugs.

The court was told Thompson was arrested and placed in the Toowoomba watch-house after police identified his fingerprints inside a stolen vehicle that belonged to a person unknown to him.

On March 22, 2024, while in the watch-house, officers conducted a strip search of Thompson after observing another inmate pass an unknown item to him under the cell door.

The search turned up a 1.9g bag of cannabis, concealed between his buttocks; while a later search located components of a hypodermic needle, believed, by police, to have been hidden inside his anus.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Chris Willson conceded Thompson had only one previous charge of a “similar cheeky manner” in his history.

Thompson also unlawfully drove a white Mitsubishi vehicle, abandoning the owner of the vehicle on the side of the road and stole $397.64 in fuel and alcohol.

Mr Wilson labelled Thompson a “recidivist unlawful use offender”.

He has (11) stolen cars on his history and today he’s adding another two... in roughly a 12 month period,” Constable Willson said.

“He has been given probation with little effect.”

Thompson’s solicitor Claire Graham said her client struggled with addiction and accommodation options, leading to his offending.

“He’s had a difficult upbringing; his mother is unfortunately deceased and he is a young person with some limited family support,” Ms Graham said.

“That causes him difficulty both with his compliance with parole and the ability to apply for parole.”

Magistrate Kyna Morice told Thompson to consider his plans for the future or fall prey to the “revolving door of custody”.

“The stealing of cars is fairly high on the radar of the community, particularly in Toowoomba,” Ms Morice said.

“The time you will spend in custody will give you plenty of time to work out what you’re going to do when you’re released.”

He was given a head sentence of nine months in prison; however, 114 days of pre-sentence custody was declared as time served and he was immediately granted parole eligibility.
