A Toowoomba woman was brought back before the courts for drug charges after she was caught speeding with meth in her system on a suspended licence, and later in possession of a bong and cannabis.

The Toowoomba Magistrates Court heard Reanna Jay Cornelis-Washington had minor criminal history relating to drug offences.

The court heard when officers intercepted the 29-year-old speeding along West St in Toowoomba on July 6, she returned a positive roadside reading for meth and cannabis.

Her licence was also flagged in the officer’s system as being demerit point suspended, however Washington told police she wasn’t aware.

A month later when police went to a Mount Lofty address to make inquiries about a stolen car, the court heard officers spotted a bong and a small amount of cannabis sitting on a kitchen bench.

The court heard a number of people were at the address at the time, and Washington said the items belonged to her.

It was not alleged Washington was involved in the stolen car investigation.

When Washington pleaded guilty to drug driving on a SPER +uspended P-plate licence, and possessing drugs and drug utensils, before the court on Wednesday, September 11, she was disqualified from driving for nine months and fined $800.

Acting Magistrate Robert Turra said the most serious charge before him was the drug driving offence given her prior drug driving conviction, noting the suspension and fine would be an onerous penalty for the woman who was receiving the carers’ pension for her father.

He warned Washington, although she intended to get a prescription for medicinal cannabis, she would be “rolling the dice” if she chose to continue to drive and “smoke bongs”.

Convictions were recorded.
