A MAN looking to supplement his JobKeeper payments by selling cannabis to his mates has found himself before a magistrate.

Elliot Jeffery Williamson, 23, pleaded guilty on Monday to 28 drug charges, including 23 counts of supplying cannabis.

Police prosecutor Jessica Lynch told the Toowoomba Magistrates Court that Williamson sold cannabis throughout 2020, from February to November.

“The aggravating feature is the length of time for which the supplies were carried on by the defendant,” he said.

“It is a significant period.”

The quantities ranged from one gram to 28 grams.

Defence solicitor Chris Main told the court that Williamson was working as a casual salesman at Connor Menswear when the Covid pandemic hit.

His hours were cut, and Williamson spent most of 2020 on the JobKeeper payment.

Mr Main added that Williamson moved back to his parent’s home in Tenterfield two days after his arrest, “so he could remove himself from what he calls the drug scene in Toowoomba that he found himself in”.

Williamson has since taken on three jobs, including a sales traineeship with a Tenterfield metal fabricator.

“There are eight different people who my client has sold cannabis to by using Facebook Messenger and text messages,” he said.

“This is a case where he is selling cannabis to his mates.”

Magistrate Howard Osborne took note of Williamson’s previous clean criminal history and ordered an 18-month period of probation, with no convictions recorded.
