Mum supplied cannabis to her 15-year-old daughter and 17-year-old son, Toowoomba court told

A 43-year-old woman pleaded guilty to supplying drugs to others, including her own teenage children. The judge was not impressed.

Should Cannabis be legal in Australia?

A drug dealing mother and grandmother supplied her own 15-year-old daughter and 17-year-old son with cannabis, Toowoomba Supreme Court has been told.

The 43-year-old woman, who is not named so as to protect the identities of her daughter and son who were juveniles at the time, pleaded guilty on Thursday to 13 counts of supplying a dangerous drug and one of possessing a “thing” used to supply a dangerous drug.

Crown prosecutor Nicole Friedewald told the court the woman’s offending came to light when police approached the car she was sitting in at a Lockyer Valley town in November 2020.

A download of her mobile phone showed police a series of what appeared to be drug related activity and a subsequent search of the home of a friend of the woman’s and two more seized mobile phones had confirmed drug dealing though the woman initially denied the messages were to do with drugs, she said.

The messages related to actual supplies and offers of supplies of small amounts of cannabis and meth including the actual supply of cannabis to her 15-year-old daughter, Ms Friedewald said.

Though the woman had spent three nights in custody for breaching bail offences she had mainly received fines in the past for drug offending, she said.

The woman’s barrister Steve Kissick said his client had been diagnosed with cancer for which she was operated on in April 2021 and hospitalised again twice in 2022.

The woman was still receiving medical treatment for significant health issues, he said.

The woman was a mother of six and grandmother of five, he said.

Justice Susan Brown was scathing of the woman’s decision to provide her teenage children with cannabis.

“You can’t get much lower than that,” Justice Brown told her.

“To actually harm your own children by offending.”

Taking into account the woman’s limited criminal history and her significant health issues, Justice Brown sentenced the woman to 20 months in jail but ordered she be released on parole immediately.
