The 62-year-old man killed in a three-vehicle crash near Wellcamp last week has been identified.
Toowoomba Magistrates Court was told Kerry James Clanchy was travelling in a Hyundai on Toowoomba Cecil Plains Road near the Acton Vale Stud Road intersection about 5.09pm on Thursday, January 25, when a blue Kia sedan allegedly slid across the road into the path of Mr Clanchy’s vehicle.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Tim Hutton told the court police alleged the Kia sedan was driven by 21-year-old Kingsthorpe man Jayme Turl who it was alleged was driving while disqualified and with a breath/alcohol level more than three times the legal limit.
Mr Turl appeared before Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Friday, January 26, on charges of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death while adversely affected by an intoxicating substance as well as other traffic related matters.
Sgt Hutton told the court early police investigations pointed to Mr Turl failing to properly negotiate a curve in the road and his car sliding across the road into the path of two oncoming cars.
The driver of the third vehicle was treated for relatively minor injuries, the court heard.
Unfortunately, Mr Clanchy was unresponsive when he was removed from his vehicle and was pronounced deceased at the scene at 5.43pm, Sgt Hutton said.
During a brief appearance before the court, Mr Turl was not required to enter any pleas to his charges.
However, he was refused bail by Magistrate Clare Kelly and remanded in custody to appear via video link from the jail when next his matters will be mentioned before the same court on March 15.
