An 85-year-old Adare man has died after he was struck by a utility while crossing the Warrego Highway on foot at Hatton Vale.
The initial reports are that the man suffered a critical head injury and other multiple serious injuries after he was hit by the white 2015 Mazda Bt-50 utility shortly after 7.30am on Monday.
Emergency services were called to the scene near Summerholm Road but there was little they could do to save him.
Eastbound traffic was affected as officers from the Queensland Police Service Forensic Crash Unit launched its investigation.
The driver, a 26-year-old Bundamba man, was not physically injured.
It is understood that it is unlikely the utility driver will face any charges.
The truck was carrying fuel at the time and the crash sparked a large fire that complicated paramedics’ access to the injured woman.
Darling Downs Country Patrol Group Inspector Danny Shaw said the crashes are timely reminders about paying attention while travelling on or near highways.
“All we can do is encourage people to drive to the conditions and stay fully focused on the road,” he said.
“That is not to say distracted driving is a factor either of these crashes but vehicles are the most dangerous thing people are in charge of daily, if they’re not managed correctly
“We are asking people to be cautious when they are near the highways and they are not places for people to be walking along or trying to cross by foot.”
Anyone with information about either crash, including dashcam footage, should phone Policelink on 131 444.
