Investigations continue to identify Warwick truck crash victim

A woman believed to be in her 40s who tragically died when her sedan collided with a truck carrying fuel on the New England Highway south of Warwick is yet to be formally identified as police begin to prepare a report for a coroner.

A Queensland Police Service spokesperson said investigations were continuing into the fatal incident which occurred on the New England Hwy near Warwick on Sunday.

However, it could take a coroner months to formally identify the victim.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said the truck was reported to be carrying about 1000 litres of fuel when it collided with the sedan near the Rosenthal Rd intersection shortly before 1pm on Sunday.

The crash ignited a large fire around the truck and plumes of black smoke could be seen from kilometres away from the scene. The truck trailer was destroyed.

An ambulance spokeswoman said the fire had impeded paramedics’ access to the injured person in the sedan.

Police said a woman in her 40s was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is understood the truck driver, a 52-year-old Goondiwindi man, was able to exit the vehicle with minimal injuries.

A rescue chopper was initially called in, but had since been stood down.

Police established a 300m exclusion zone while they brought the fire under control. There were also reports of multiple small grass fires near the crash scene. The public was urged to avoid the area.
