Former Toowoomba car salesman David James Craigen has had eight stealing charges against him mentioned before the city’s Magistrates Court.

Mr Craigen, 55, appeared in court on Tuesday alongside his legal representative Matt McCarthy, of Creevey Horrell Lawyers, who asked for an adjournment of eight to 12 weeks as his client had matters before the Toowoomba District Court.

Mr McCarthy told the court an indictment on fraud charges had been presented to the District Court but that matter had yet to be dealt with.

It was while Mr Craigen was in custody on unrelated matters that he was charged with the stealing counts and two counts of fraud – dishonestly obtaining property from another to the value of or more than $30,000 but less than $100,000, as the charge read on the court list.

Those fraud matters had been taken up to the higher court but the stealing charges remained in the Magistrates Court jurisdiction.

Magistrate Kay Philipson asked why the eight stealing charges couldn’t be dealt with by the Magistrates Court, but Mr McCarthy said his instructions were to seek an adjournment of those matters.

Mr Craigen has not as yet been required to enter any pleas to the charges and no particulars of the allegations have been aired in court.

Ms Philipson remanded Mr Craigen on bail and adjourned the stealing charges for mention back in the same court on April 17.
