Chelsea Jo Leak, accused of involvement in Queens Park dating app trap, to take charges up to higher court

One of three people charged with what is alleged to have been a dating app scam to lure a 29-year-old man to Queens Park where he was allegedly bashed and robbed has taken her charges up to the higher court.

Chelsea Jo Leak was not required to be in Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Wednesday when her charges were mentioned but was represented by Legal Aid Queensland solicitor Nikola Prince.

Ms Prince told the court registry documents pertaining to her client’s case had been lodged with the prosecution in March.

A registry committal is the process of taking matters before the Magistrates Court up to the District Court jurisdiction.

Ms Leak, 19, and co-accused Kathryn Grace Leighton, 18, are accused of using a dating app to lure the 29-year-old complainant to Queens Park on a night in October, 2022, where it was alleged a third accomplice, Kyle James Dale Hibbins, 19, and the two women assaulted him and stole $500 cash along with the man’s phone, jacket and shirt.

Police claim the injured complainant was taken by ambulance to Toowoomba Hospital where it was found he had four fractures to his spine.

None of the three accused have as yet been required to enter any pleas to the charges which include assault occasioning bodily harm while armed and in company, and robbery with violence while armed and in company.

Magistrate Louise Shephard remanded Ms Leak on bail and adjourned her matters for mention on May 17 by which time it was expected her charges would have gone up to the District Court.

Kathryn Leighton is next scheduled to appear in Toowoomba Magistrates Court on April 19 with Kyle Hibbins’ matters to be mentioned in court at a later date.
