A Gatton magistrate warned a man that if he failed to comply with his reporting obligations to the Child Protection Registry again he would spend time behind bars.

Steven Graham Wigg, fronted Gatton Magistrates Court on April 4, and pleaded guilty to failing to complete his quarterly report in February at Toowoomba.

The court was told the 50-year-old man had failed to comply with his reporting obligations four times in the past, one of which resulted in him spending six weeks in jail.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Narelle Lowe said Wigg was placed on the sex offence register in 2019 for five years, however it was later increased to 10 years after he reoffended.

Duty lawyer Paul Emmerson told the court Wigg wanted his past to stay in the past, and he had set up alerts to remind him to report in the future.

Mr Emmerson told the court Wigg was unemployed and did not have the capacity to pay a fine, however it was likely that he would soon be working for The Salvation Army.

“He wants his past to be the past,” he said.

At Kingaroy District Court in September 2020, Wigg was sentenced to two years and nine months imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to possessing child exploitation material.

The South Burnett court heard Wigg had thousands of child exploitation images, even though he was convicted of the same offence in 2019.

The court heard 2831 child exploitation images of children aged 12 and under, were located on Wigg’s devices.

Of those images, 15 involved explicit sexual acts being performed on children, and

at least 100 were of pre-pubescent girls forced to show their genitalia.

While being sentenced for his fresh charge, magistrate Shane Elliott said given Wigg’s history and the seriousness of his reporting obligation, the only option left was to sentence him to a term of imprisonment.

Wigg was sentenced to one month imprisonment, suspended for six months.
