A 30-year-old Toowoomba man with a penchant for being belligerent with police when drunk has been placed on probation for 12 months to get help addressing his alcohol and anger issues.
Andrew David Wunsch Georgeson had been drunk and yelling abuse at traffic and lying in the gutter about midnight April 13 to the point an ambulance was called, Toowoomba Magistrates Court was told.
He then became abusive with paramedics who were trying to help him and they called police and stepped back, worried for their own safety, the court heard.
When police arrived minutes later, Wunsch Georgeson was seen to place a half-bottle of vodka into his trousers and berate the officers, yelling “What the f--k do you want?” before he refused to give his name, address and date of birth. He continued to be abusive with the officers who had to walk and drag him to the police vehicle where he put his foot against the car and struggled with police trying to place him in the vehicle, the court was told.
Wunch Georgeson pleaded guilty to obstructing police and contravening a police direction from that incident as well as to another obstruct police charge arising from a drunken incident at a Toowoomba residence on the evening of May 27.
The court was told the 30-year-old had a history of like offending and in January 2022 had been sentenced to 15 months’ imprisonment, after having spent 68 days in custody, for biting a policeman at the watch house and he had in the past been fined and placed on probation for serious assault of police and assaulting and obstructing police offences.
His solicitor Brad Skuse told the court these recent offences were not as serious as those in Wunch Georgeson’s past and it was his history that was the most serious aspect of this offending.
The 30-year-old was “heavily intoxicated” during both incidents, he said.
Despite the fact of the incidents, his client didn’t believe he had an alcohol problem, Mr Skuse said.
That submission was not accepted by magistrate Louise Shephard who said lying drunk in the gutter would suggest otherwise.
Ms Shephard convicted and placed Wunsch Georgeson on 12 months’ probation.
