A North Coast man bashed his partner and tried to carry her away from a shopping centre to stop her seeking help as numerous triple-0 calls were made by concerned members of the public.

Kyle Currie from Brunswick Heads faced Lismore Local Court over videolink from custody this week.

The 21-year-old pleaded guilty to assault causing actual bodily harm and intimidation.

Court documents state Currie became hostile towards his then-partner aged in her late 20s at a bus stop on Brewster St outside Lismore Square Shopping Centre about 9.30am on August 17.

He punched the woman in the face, leaving her disorientated and bleeding from her mouth and nose.

The woman went into the shopping centre’s car park to get help from security guards while Currie followed.

A witness saw Currie grab the victim and block her path as she screamed: “Let go of me, get away from me.”

The victim reached an escalator that would take her to the centre, but Currie then attempted to carry her away from the shopping centre, the documents state.

The woman screamed, kicked her legs and bit Currie’s neck in self-defence, forcing him to put her down and flee.

Police received multiple triple-0 calls from witnesses asking for urgent assistance.

Officers found the victim “bloody, bruised and swollen”, unable to open her eyes. The woman was taken to Lismore Base Hospital for treatment.

Police arrested Currie and asked officers: “Is she OK? I only punched her in the face once.”

Court documents describe Currie as a violent offender who showed no remorse.

Currie told Magistrate Danielle Mansour on Monday: “I have a baby on the way, it’s due in March.”

Currie’s lawyer Belinda O’Dwyer said her client had schizophrenia and had been exposed to domestic violence in his life.

Ms Mansour adjourned the case to next month to allow completion of as a sentence assessment report.
