The Western Clydesdales have left no stone unturned in the Hastings Deering Colts season preparation.

Working under the belief their season would start alongside their under-16, U18 and U19 clubmates, the Colts squad started pre-season in November.

“We figured our season would start around the same time as the other sides so we started training in November,” coach Gus McKellar said.

“It’s been a long pre-season but the boys are ready.

“We’ve had a few really good trial games and they’re looking forward to the first game this weekend.”

While their pre-season has been long the focus has been simple for McKellar and his young squad.

The Clydesdales have been working on a style of game that plays to their strengths and officials are stressing the importance of ‘pride in the jersey’.

“We’re really happy with the squad we’ve put together – we have some fantastic young players,” McKellar said.

“We don’t have the biggest side but we’re not exactly small either.

“Consistency is important whenever you play footy, putting in the effort from start to finish.

“We will play with plenty of ball movement and width … use our brains to play smart footy and move the opposition around.

“Pride in the jersey and working for the player next to you is also important.

“It’s a big deal pulling on the jersey and representing the region at this level.

“I think they (the players) understand that and will do their best for the club and the region.”

The Clydesdales first match is this Sunday against the Brisbane Tigers at Totally Workwear Stadium. Kick off is at 3pm.
