Western Clydesdales record first win with round 1 home game

With the 2023 season draw yet to be announced The Chronicle can reveal who the Western Clydesdales will take on in the first two rounds of their cup return. See their opponents here.

LEAGUE: The Western Clydesdales ‘back office’ have recorded the club’s first win of the season – a round one Hostplus Cup home game.

The Clydesdales will play host to cup excitement machines the Papua New Guinea Hunters.

“It’s a fantastic reward for our Clydesdales and Toowoomba Rugby League faithful,” Western Clydesdales CEO Shane Sullivan said.

“A round one home game was really important to us and we fought hard to make sure we secured that result.

“The (PNG) Hunters are going to be a real test for our side.

“They have a lot of very talented players most of whom played in the recent World Cup.

“I have no doubt Jason (Alchin) will have the boys ready for the match though.”

The Clydesdales will also be at home in the second round with the Tweed Seagulls flying into the Garden City.

Following their round 3 bye, the side will head to the Sunshine Coast for their rivalry round against the Falcons.

The true rivalry clash however will be round 5 when they head down the Range to face the Ipswich Jets.

Sullivan said the club is already discussing the return of the Bulimba Cup.

“It probably won’t happen this season but we have already discussed bringing back the Bulimba Cup,” he said.

“There’s a lot of history and rivalry between the two sides and it would be good bring back the cup to revive all that.”

Queensland Rugby League released the full Hostplus Cup last Friday and the news is relatively good for Clydesdales fans.

After more than 15 years out of the elite statewide competition the Clydesdales will play nine home and 11 away games in their 2023 return.

Sullivan said the Clydesdales are currently in the process of finalising how tickets can be purchased for home games as well as membership packages.

Tickets are expected to go on sale in the coming days.
