The Toowoomba Basketball League is back for another season with some of the Garden City’s most talented ballers battling it out to put their best foot forward ahead of the Mountaineers QSL campaign.
The competition features four teams competing over six weeks and serves as preparation for the QSL men’s season.
After an exciting draft night with some big name selections, we have run the rule over the competition and narrowed down eight players who are set to light up the league this year.
Adam Gehrig
The Mountaineers and QSL League MVP and last year’s all star five member is not doubt the hottest talent in the Toowoomba Basketball League.
Coming off a semi final berth and averaging more than 16 points per game in the QSL, he is dangerous two-way player and was an obvious choice for the number one overall pick.
Patrick Roche
Roche was the second pick in the draft and is one of the most exciting talents coming through the Mountaineers system.
After making his debut in 2020, he is quickly becoming a regular contributor in the men’s side.
Roche showed why he is a player to watch in years to come in last year’s TBL, as he averaged 21 points per game and earned all star five selection.
His potential star power was most evident by the fact Warriors coach Jason Krienke traded his first overall pick in Gehrig to gain the services of Roche.
Bailey Nwanevu
Nwanevu returns after a year off through injury and will be eager to bring the house down.
He is a an athletic weapon and few can match his speed or his vertical leap.
Nwanevu burst on the scene back in 2020 when he showed he can match it with the big guns, guarding NBL players talents Nathan Sobey, Tanner Krebs, Will McDowell-White and Jason Cadee.
He has built his craft as a defensive stopper and his elite athletic ability makes him a perennial threat in transition.
Sam Geu
Geu is a grade 12 student at Toowoomba Grammar School and has been a force to be reckoned with in the GPS as he helped them to their maiden title two years ago.
He is a reliable player who bailed the Mountaineers out of trouble on several occasions in his season and will look to spread his wings in the TBL this year.
Mitch Davis
Davis has had a remarkable career in the Mountaineers and Toowoomba basketball set up.
Known for his elite shot blocking and imposing defensive presence, he has developed his skills on the offensive end to become one of the premier bigs in the Toowoomba Basketball League.
He has shown he can perform when the lights are at their brightest as he was a member of the all star five last season and was the Player of the Grand Final.
Will Mitchell
Mitchell is another player who has been perennially involved with the Mountaineers and Toowoomba basketball programs.
He is a big man who is as tough as they come and was another all star five member last year.
Kizito Otyem
Otyem is a Toowoomba young gun with huge potential and fresh off the back of a gold medal in the Under-18 State Championships, he will look to continue his impressive run of form.
He has a strong build and excellent touch around the rim and has also proven to be a handy shooter when needed as well.
Theo Hess
Hess is a long, athletic wing who has a superb jumpshot and was one of the leading shooters from long-range last season.
He has made the step up to the Mountaineers training squad this year and this competition serves as the perfect opportunity for him to have a breakout 2024.
