Beaten teams rarely feature Player of the Match performances but if anyone deserves a shout in a losing team it’s Jason Randell.
Northern Brothers Diggers suffered an outright defeat in their B-grade semi-final clash with Metropolitan Easts Gold, but Randell did everything possible to get his team over the line.
Find out why Randell and another B-grade star headline our list of top Toowoomba Cricket two-day semi-final performances below.
A-grade
Ryan Ward (Western Districts): With the Uni top three combining for just 25 runs Ward destroyed any hopes they had of securing a grand final spot. Ward ripped through the middle order claiming 6-35 off 23 overs with Uni all out for 79 runs.
Jordan Sondergeld (Northern Brothers Diggers): Paired well with Watterson in the NBD bowling attack. Sondergeld finished with figures of 4-46 and 1-11 in his side’s narrow defeat.
Daniel Pollock (Met Easts): With runs hard to come by, Pollock produced a handy knock in the middle order. Hitting 44 from 64 balls, Pollock scored nearly a third of his team’s 149-run total.
Connor Philp (Northern Brothers Diggers): Batting at seven Philp outscored the six batters who preceded him hitting 46 off 103 balls. Diggers scored just 106 runs in their first innings.
Reserve Grade
David Callick (Souths Magpies): Chasing a first innings total of 131, the skipper got his side off to the perfect start with a gritty 66 off 144 balls.
Christopher Smythe (Souths Magpies): Batting at four, Smythe followed his skipper’s lead with an equally gritty and patient 72 not out off 187 balls.
Luke Guymer (Northen Brothers Diggers): With his team sent into bat, Guymer top scored with 50 off 81.
Paul Toohey (Met Easts): The skipper set the tone with the ball taking 4-25 including the key wicket of Guymer.
Benjamin Toohey (Met Easts): One of just two Trojans players to reach double figures in their first innings, Toohey hit seven boundaries on his way to scoring 58 runs.
B-grade
Tom Clench (Met Easts Gold): Clench battled his way to an unbeaten 44 off 117 balls with his side posting just 130 runs.
Jacob Jeans (Northern Brothers Diggers): Met Easts had no answer for Jeans with the Diggers opening bowler taking 5-41 off 17 overs.
Tom Yeo (Met Easts Gold): Yeo was unplayable ripping through the Diggers batting line up taking 4-14 off 5 overs. Yeo backed up with 4-25 in his second innings.
Blake Murray (Northern Brothers Diggers): The number three was the pick of the batters in his side’s second innings hitting 46 off 83 balls.
TOP FIVE STARS
5. Brian May (Western Districts A-grade)
The Warriors A-grade and TCI veteran produced another typical ‘big game’ knock. May was the lone resistance in the Warriors batting line-up scoring an unbeaten 100 off 253 balls. Sent into bat after Uni won the toss, Warriors finished with 8-228 in their first innings.
4. Jason Randell (Northern Brothers Diggers B-grade)
Normally 28 runs is nothing to celebrate, but when you’re the only player to post double figures and your team is rolled for just 63 runs you deserve a little praise.
Randell however deserves his spot on this list due to a mesmerising spell with the ball which saw him almost single-handedly clean up Met Easts.
The talented bowling all-rounder took 7-47 off 17 overs. His team suffered an outright defeat but Randell deserves Player of the Match honours for his dazzling performance with the ball.
3. Adam Kerrigan (Metropolitan Easts Blue B-grade)
Kerrigan punished the University bowling attack hitting 121 off 204 balls.
Opening the batting after his side lost the toss, Kerrigan hit 16 boundaries and cleared the fence twice during his innings.
2. Aidan Watterson (Northern Brothers Diggers A-grade)
The Diggers skipper made the right choice after winning the toss and electing to bowl. Watterson troubled the Met Easts top order finishing with 5-45 off 17 overs.
Back after a stint in Brisbane grade cricket Watterson was in impressive form with the ball backing up his first innings five-for with 4-23 in the second innings.
1. Shoeb Harun (Metropolitan Easts Blue B-grade)
Harun terrorised the University batting line-up in arguably the best bowling performance of the Toowoomba Cricket season.
The Metropolitan Easts man took 7-20 off 11 overs (five maidens) with Uni all out for 36 in just 21 overs.
