RUGBY LEAGUE: As the Clydesdales prepare for their first Queensland Cup game in more than 16 years, The Chronicle is on the hunt to find their greatest QLD Cup player.

With the help of Queensland Rugby League guru Brad Tallon we’ve compiled a list of the 227 players that lined for the Clydesdales in the Cup between 1996 and 2006.

Locals Matt Ballin, Nathan Friend, Ben, Chris and Shane Walker all got their first taste of elite rugby league when they represented the Clydesdales before having their own NRL careers.

The likes of Justin Hodges, Corey Parker, Denan Kemp and Lote Tuqiri, are all players that were shipped to Toowoomba to hone their craft before returning to their respective NRL sides.

These are just a few of the names on this list.

During their QLD Cup stint, the Clydesdales were among the competition’s top performers.

“From this decade, we had so many incredible players that went on to have representative careers in the NRL, Origin, Australia and so on,” Western Clydesdales chairman Tony Coonan said.

“We went to four grand finals, winning two and losing two during this time.

“Regardless of what people may say, this era added to the rich history, the legend and the brand of the Clydesdales.”
