The Toowoomba Sports Club Women’s competition headlines our Round 9 Toowoomba Rugby League Talking Points.
Heading into the weekend’s fixtures, six of the competition’s eight teams were still in the hunt for a top four spot and finals footy.
Well beaten by Pittsworth on Sunday, Gatton are now out of contention but the top four race is no less exciting heading into this weekend’s final round.
Brothers fire warning
Any doubt about Brothers’ title credentials was dispelled at the weekend.
The Brethren put powerhouse Wattles to the sword on Sunday scoring nine tries in 50-24 demolition.
Nicholas Carrie and Jackson Lenzo were the stars scoring doubles in the 13-try thriller.
Unfortunately Brothers’ big win was marred by a serious injury.
Western Clydesdales aligned star Hayden Ensbey was heavily concussed in an alleged high tackle during the match.
Must win games
Highfields and Valleys women will play finals footy regardless of how they perform in round 10.
The twin powerhouses will finish in the top two as well as playing a key role in how the top four shapes up.
In what will be a blockbuster weekend for league fans the top four – Valleys vs Oakey and Highfields vs Brothers – will square off.
Fourth-placed Brothers (10 points) have the most to lose with the Hursley Road club holding onto the last finals place by way of superior points difference to Pittsworth.
A loss for Brothers would be costly with Pittsworth finding form at the right time of the year.
Chasing a third straight win this weekend the Danes hammered Gatton 28-0 on Sunday – the same team they will play again on Saturday.
Roosters crow
You can’t keep a top club down and Valleys Roosters have always been a top club.
After starting the season with just one win in their first five games the Roosters are flying high.
Valleys head into the weekend chasing a fifth straight win after beating Dalby Diehards 30-16 on Sunday.
What’s most impressive about Valleys’ revival is how they’ve won their games.
More than a dozen of last year’s beaten grand final team left the club in the off-season meaning Valleys went through a complete A-grade rebuild.
They don’t have the big names of previous year’s but they do have one of the best teams in the competition.
Valleys success to date is the result of hard, team work and a next man up mentality – it’s worked so far and no doubt will continue to bring success.
