CYCLING : Twin victories at this year’s Australia Road National Championships was always going to be a tough act to follow for emerging Toowoomba cyclist Declan Trezise.
But there is no sign of any post-championship let-down for the 17-year-old who continues to power on towards his next championship goal later this month.
Trezise underlined his potential with gold medal wins in the national under-19 road race and criterium in January’s national titles at Ballarat.
His next major focus is the 2020 Elite and under-19 National Track Championships at Brisbane’s Anna Meares Velodrome from March 25-29.
With the event now only weeks away Trezise is enjoying an impressive title build-up with strong recent performances in Bundaberg and Logan.
Trezise teamed at the four-day UCI International meeting in Bundaberg with Liam Walsh for a podium finish in the elite 50km madison.
The pair took the bronze medal behind the current Australian champion madison team of Godfrey Slatery and Connor Leahy and the German team of Julius Dominick and Hans Piruis.
Trezise’s encouraging run of form continued in last Sunday’s opening round of the Sizzling Summer Series in Logan.
Trezise won gold in the one-hour plus three-lap criterium race at Crestmead.
NRS Team “Futuro Pro Cycling” teammate Rhys Robotham led out for the last lap while teammate Liam Walsh led Trezise through the final two corners.
Trezise said both his Bundaberg and Summer Series results exceeded his expectations and provided him with a welcome confidence boost moving further into 2020.
“It’s nice to be able to back up my road success and prove to myself that Ballarat was not just a one-hit wonder,” Trezise said yesterday
“Bundaberg was a great result for Liam and myself.
“We headed up there to basically enjoy ourselves and have a bit of fun against so many good riders.
“But we had a plan that worked out well for us and to finish on the podium in such a prestigious event was very satisfying.
“Again in the Summer Series it was all about building towards the track nationals and I finished up winning the crit to be leading the series.
“My self belief is continuing to grow and it’s nice to know I can compete against and beat these guys.
“The support since I moved to Brisbane has been amazing and the opportunity to train regularly alongside riders like Liam Walsh is a great help.”
