ATHLETICS: He’s still relatively new to the Gift game, but Anas Abu Ganaba has a near perfect strike rate.
Ganaba added a second Gift title in just his third race when he crossed the line first in the Postle Gift at the weekend.
Victory in Pittsworth was a welcome surprise for the Gold Coast sprinter who didn’t fancy his chances earlier in the day.
“I felt like I wasn’t ready after I finished my heat,” Ganaba said.
“I was thinking maybe it wasn’t my day – I was still committed to trying my best though.”
Fortunately a quick chat with his coach before the semi-final turned things around for Ganaba.
With a focus on running his own race the 26-year-old, who started from scratch, was able to beat home a fast field in the final.
“I had a chat with my coach (Tony Fairweather) and he said I was over-thinking things. I was putting a lot of my pressure on myself as well,” Ganaba said.
“I race my best when I’m feeling relaxed.
“In the semi (final) and the final I just tried to stay relaxed and run my own race.
“I really enjoy starting from scratch because it kind of makes you run your race.
“I focus on trying to pass the first person in front of me as quickly as possible — I did that in the final and I won.
“It was an amazing feeling and I will definitely be back next year to defend the title.”
