Toowoomba’s Jaimie-Lee Strang is set to take her game to another level when she heads to Newcastle to represent Queensland Country in the Australian Country Cricket Championships next month.

Strang is one of three South West players included in the squad and was excited to take on some of the nation’s best cricketers.

“It was absolutely brilliant to be named for Queensland, the fact that I get to travel for cricket is a bit shocking but it is very nice,” she said.

“I have represented Queensland Country before but I missed out last year due to being ill but to be named again was amazing.

“I get to travel to Newcastle as well which is overwhelming because I have never been there before and the fact that it is fully funded is also a bit shocking.

“I have been overseas a couple of times on contracts, but not representing anything just off my own back, so this is my first time travelling for Queensland.”

Strang is currently playing First Grade for Gold Coast and has taken on a leadership role this season.

“I have had to step up this season to be one of the senior girls which was a bit hard but I think I have taken it quite well being a role model in the team and helping all the young girls,” she said.

“Ability wise, I can definitely see myself improving with every game and hopefully see some good runs by the end of the season.”

Strang is hopeful a strong performance in this competition will help her gain traction on the national stage as she has her sights set on one day breaking into the Queensland Fire set up.

“I will be able to play against some real quality cricketers and play with some quality cricketers in the state and just being able to meet new people and see everybody’s game, it will just be a great experience,” she said.

“I think this will be just the step below the Fire and this competition will really prepare me for something like that and I am very keen for it.

“If I do well in this competition then eyes will probably be on me as well as any other girl who does well.”

While it would be easy for Strang to be purely focused on impressing WNCL selectors, she has continued to ensure she leads by example at club level.

“This season I just want to be a really good role model to my team by just buckling down and training hard,” she said.

“Then hopefully I get scouted or spotted by one of those selectors and get the message saying ‘hey we have got our eye on you’, that is my biggest goal.”
