MOTORSPORT: With two V8 Supercars legends dominating his rear view mirror, Toowoomba’s Will Brown stamped his mark on Australia’s premier racing competition at the weekend.
Brown showed experience beyond his years at Sydney Motorsport Park – holding off Jamie Whincup and Shane van Gisbergen to secure his first V8 Supercars race win.
The win caps off an amazing run for the 23-year-old Erebus Motorsport driver who has claimed two podium finishes and a pole position in recent weeks.
“It was an awesome feeling crossing that finish line first,” Brown said.
“Having to hold off Shane (van Gisbergen) and Jamie (Whincup) to seal it only made the experience better.
“It is really exciting, not just for me but the whole team; we’re all pumped.
“Everyone in the team has been working hard to get the car set up so we can perform at our best.
“This is a result we can all celebrate.”
While the past few weeks have been hectic, the return to racing after Covid-19 restrictions brought about a three month lockdown was welcomed by Brown.
“Being back behind the wheel has been great,” Brown said.
“I guess some drivers may have enjoyed that bit of a break, but for me I just couldn’t wait to be racing again.
“I spent the whole time making sure I was working hard, staying in shape, so I’d be ready to go when we came back.”
The dedication to his craft has clearly paid off for Brown but the V8 Supercars young gun has no plans to rest on his laurels.
“I’ve never tried to play the rookie card,” Brown said.
“I’m excited to be out there racing against the big guns every weekend – it’s always been my dream.
“If this win means a bit more attention from other drivers than so be it.
“I’m all for good hard, fun racing.
“The work doesn’t stop though, we keep going and try to build on this win.”
Brown will have another chance to test himself in Sydney this weekend with two 250km races on the championship schedule.
