Toowoomba teen Evie King has caught ‘green and gold Aussie fever’.
King will line-up behind home plate when the Oz Ball Aussie Drop Bears compete at the
Babe Ruth World Series League – U14 Softball World Series in July.
The national squad call-up came as a surprise for the 14-year-old catcher whose focus has been on Queensland Country selection.
“The Drop Bears stuff was not something I had on my mind, but it was so cool and it’s an opportunity I didn’t want to give up,” King said.
“I’ve been training and focusing heavily on making the Queensland Country side for a while now and that has been my main goal; so I was super happy when I got selected.
“I’m super excited to be a part of both sides.”
The 10-day tournament will see the Bears play up to three games a day, against elite American sides.
King is excited to test herself against some of the State’s best young talent.
“It’s a much bigger community over there (America), and there are a lot more players, so they are super competitive,” she said.
“It’s going to be cool to see the level of play and it’ll be a good challenge to face them.”
With Drop Bears located all over Australia squad members will be take part in Zoom meetings and personal training sessions.
The July 17-26 tournament will be a first for Drop Bears with the Aussies also send an U16 squad.
The event will be held at Treasure Coast, Florida.
