Player numbers are up in Toowoomba softball and the season is just about to start, but there’s still an opportunity for young stars to throw on a glove or step up to the plate.

SOFTBALL:The Toowoomba softball season hits off this weekend, but there’s still opportunities to step up to the plate and play.

With softball back on the Olympic stage, Toowoomba softball has seen a good surge in player numbers.

“I think softball being at the Olympics really helps,” Toowoomba Softball Association president Jayke Reynolds said.

“People see the sport at the Olympics, enjoy it and think ‘I’d like to try that’, so they seek out their local competition.

“Our clubs have been really active in terms of promotion and seeking out players this year as well.

“Our numbers are up this year.

“I think every club has at least a team in each of the junior age divisions, the senior A-grade women has gone from four to six teams and the men’s from four to five.”

Competition play gets under way today but a Come and Try Day on Sunday, which will include a special exhibition, will introduce potential junior players to the sport.

“The junior season will actually be a day old by Sunday, but we still want juniors to come down and have a look,” Reynolds said.

“It’s a free event, and it’s all about introducing kids to the game.

“We’ve got some fun little skill drills they can get involved in and an exhibition match between some of our junior Toowoomba teams.

“And if anyone decides to sign up on the day, they’ll receive a free glove and water bottle.

“All of our junior clubs will have a representative there; we’ll be able to find junior players a club straight away.”

The event will run from 8.30am to noon on Sunday, October 10 at the Kearney’s Spring Sports Complex.

The exhibition matches starts at 10am.
