BASEBALL: With the season nearly over and both sides sitting in second place, the Toowoomba Rangers Baseball Club are on a roll.

In particular, the Division 4 Men’s side is making their opponents look silly.

On the weekend, the Rangers played the Redland Rays in Brisbane.

To say the Rangers were dominant would be an understatement.

The final score was 30-5, with the sixth inning not being played.

Club president Steve Metzroth wasn’t able to make it to the game but was being updated at the end of each innings by his team.

“I was getting updates from the boys and I remember seeing that they were up 12-4 in the fourth (inning),” he said.

“Then I looked again about 30 minutes later and saw that they had won 30-5.

“Honestly I thought it was a typo.”

The whole side contributed to the score with each player recording at least two runs.

“Big TJ (Verhay) hit a bomb that went for a grand slam,” Metzroth said.

“He’d been hanging out for a big hit all season and he finally got his chance on the weekend.”

Coach and player Mick Locke said it was a team effort but praised TJ Verhay.

“TJ smashed a grand slam home run which was just awesome,” he said.

“The original pitcher was underage so he had a pitching limit of 120 (balls), then some other player from the team got on the mound and was pitching, he was not as good as the kid obviously.

“I think that’s got to be the highest single innings score I’ve been apart of.”
