HOCKEY: The strength and dedication of the Toowoomba hockey community has come to the fore with several of its members nominated for Hockey Queensland awards.

The Toowoomba Hockey Association is also a finalist in the Initiative of the Year category for its Under-15 Invitational Tournament that drew in teams from across Queensland in 2020.

“We’re incredibly lucky to have some wonderful volunteers,” THA regional hockey manager Matt Cook said.

“People who are dedicated, passionate and put in countless hours to ensure the continued success and development of hockey here in Toowoomba and it’s pleasing to see them acknowledged through these awards.”

THA is a finalist in two award categories and three individuals are also in line for honours – an achievement that would not be possible without team work and unity according to Cook.

“Last year’s Under-15 Invitational Tournament points to the strength of our community with every club involved in the process,” he said.

“With junior fixtures cancelled in 2020 we rallied together to host a tournament that gave our juniors something to aspire to.

“We had nominations from every association and hosted 38 teams with 90 games played during the tournament.

“We have started this just as strongly with presidents from all the clubs working together to help each other out – they (the clubs and presidents) have been working with each to direct players looking for new opportunities and in some cases sharing players to clubs that need the numbers.

“It’s a great sign of how strong the hockey community is.”

Award voting is open to the general public and closes on Monday, April 5 at 11.59pm.
