Toowoomba Grammar School ready for volleyball titles

VOLLEYBALL : Competing at this weekend’s Queensland Volleyball Schools Championships is a win itself for Toowoomba Grammar School’s teams.

TGS volleyball players ready to test their skills

They do however, want to be competitive at the same time and are fully prepared to match it with the best the state has to offer.

“It’s awesome that we have an opportunity to compete this year considering all the events that haven’t happened because of coronavirus,” TGS director of volleyball Eric Smith said.

“We’re looking to put forward our best as we roll into 2021.

“This (tournament) provides a lot more opportunity for them to get touches and hopefully make our GPS season a lot stronger.

“It’s going to be a tough competition.

“The Brisbane schools are quite strong as are some of the schools from North Queensland.

“We’re going in to put our best foot forward and hopefully the boys get a lot of enjoyment out of it.”

TGS has entered four teams in the championships – Year 10 (Honours), Year 9 (Division 1), Year 8 (Division 2) and Year 7 (Division 2) – and the energy levels are high.

“The boys have jumped at every opportunity to play the game,” said.

“They love what they’re doing, they love the camaraderie built around the sport.”

Sam Noble, who was recently named in the Queensland School Merit team, is looking forward to playing.

“I’m very excited. I think our team will play very well against some tough competition,” he said.

“We’ve been training and playing five times a week, hopefully we can bring a medal home.

“I think we have some very good players, some strength in our middle positions.

“I think if we can play well under pressure and get the key points to win sets we will do very well.”

The titles will be held at various venues on the Gold Coast from October 16-18.
