Toowoomba Bears claw out victory over Rangers

Toowoomba Bears produce the good in positive Risdon Cup win over rivals.

RUGBY UNION: Toowoomba Bears produced a performance coach Bryan Battersby has been waiting for all season at the weekend.

Battersby was impressed by the grit of his young side in their 24-21 win over rivals Toowoomba Rangers.

"We've been threatening this type of performance all season," Battersby said.

"We've shown our potential in bits and pieces this year but it finally clicked.

"A lot of things went right for us - and the boys were great."

Despite missing a host of frontline players, including leading point scorer George Andreas and utility back James Bailey to representative duties, Bears stood tall.

"They (Rangers) were sharp in attack - they made us work," Battersby said.

"But I was impressed with how well we performed right across the park.

"We're a young side and quite a few of the boys are playing in positions foreign to them.

"Playing out of position puts an extra demand on them because it (playing) doesn't come naturally to them. They're working that extra bit harder but they're doing well and always improving."

In other Risdon Cup matches, Goondiwindi demolished Highfields 84-8, Dalby beat USQ 41-27 and the honours were even between Condamine and UQ who drew 24-24.
