LAWN BOWLS: The Toowoomba Bowls Club is helping secure the future of their sport.
Nearly 100 students from St Joseph's College and Fairholme College visit the club each week to learn lawn bowls during term one of the schooling year.
The demand and interest has grown to point where students are on the greens four days a week.
"The number of students involved grows every year,” Toowoomba Bowls Club representative Christine Plater said.
"The club approached schools in an effort to get more young people involved in the sport.
"We're trying to dispel the myth that it (lawn bowls) is an old person's sport.”
Plater said the students had really taken to the sport.
"The kids have really picked it up and love playing,” she said.
"Playing lawn bowls is a real art - there's a lot of skill involved.
"They seem to really love the challenge and learning something new each week.
"Our members love it too - it's an opportunity for them to pass on their knowledge. And the kids are very respectful and really listen.”
Plater said the club hoped to build a program that could produce a competitive team.
"Our goal is to eventually have a Toowoomba team for school-based competitions,” she said.
"There are so many places bowls can take you and we want to share that.”
