David Armstrong will make his NRL debut for the Newcastle Knights this Sunday.

The former Goondiwindi Boars star will wear the No. 1 jersey – replacing superstar fullback Kalyn Ponga who faces a three month stint on the sideline after injuring his foot in the Knights loss to the Bulldogs last round.

Earlier this year Armstrong spoke to this masthead about how he was relishing the opportunity to develop his game under the watchful eye of Ponga and other star players.

“Obviously you have KP (Kalyn Ponga) there, he won the Dally M last year so I’ve just been picking his brain all year round and watching how he goes about his business,” he said.

“Not just him but the Saifiti brothers, Bradman (Best) and (Dane) Gagai, I think it is cool being around them every day and seeing how they go about their business and when they are switched on you can really see their mindset flip.”

It has been a meteoric rise for the 23-year-old who was winning the TRL Hutchinson Builders A-grade premiership with the Boars just three years ago.

Armstrong was a shining light in the TRL in 2021 crossing the line 38 times, including four tries in the Boars 26-20 defeat of Highfields Eagles in the grand final.

His stunning season had Newcastle knocking on his door again with the Knights offering him a spot in their NRL program.

Armstrong first joined the Knights as an under-20s player in 2020 before the Covid pandemic cut his stint with the season cancelled.

Moving back home he linked up with the Boars and was immediately snapped up by the Knights again at the end of the 2021 TRL season.

Armstrong’s debut will on the road against the third placed Dolphins this Sunday. Kick-off at Suncorp Stadium is 2pm.
