RACING: The aptly named Real Fine Wine added his name to a long list of family winners when he broke through for an upset victory at Bunya Park today.
Real Fine Wine sunk short-price-favourite backers with a strong finishing effort in the Fermor Plumbing QTIS Two-Year-Old Handicap (1100m).
Race favourite Sassy Enuff ($1.85) raced to the front on straightening after sharing the lead to the home turn, but she had no answer over the closing stages to Real Fine Wine who arrived to score by 1¼ lengths in class record time for Kenji Yoshida.
FunkY Beat ($3.20) was a head back third.
Real Fine Wine is out of city winner Star Drop who is a daughter of Royal Shiraz.
Royal Shiraz is one of numerous family members – including Group One winner Star Shiraz – turned out by trainer Rex Lipp.
“It’s been a great family,” Lipp said.
“This bloke is out of Star Drop who won in town and hopefully there’s better to come for him.
“He’s still learning.
“He got lost in town at his first start and last time at Toowoomba when he finished third he didn’t know a lot about it either.
“He’s done a good job today.
“I’m not sure but he’ll more than likely go the paddock now.”
Earlier former New South Wales gelding Master Of Norway ($21) made it back-to-back wins since joining Toowoomba trainer Jackie Crompton with 1½-length victory for jockey Rebecca Goldsbury in the Henry (Doc) Smiles Memorial Class 2 Plate (1200m).
Goldsbury helped celebrate her recent return from New Zealand when she completed a winning double for the day aboard the Kieran Kirwin-trained outside Steel Magnolia ($26) in the Dalby Handy Man Maiden Plate (1400m).
