A Pittsworth boxer has entered the top 40 in the World Boxing Council rankings after another stellar fight on the weekend.
Pittsworth’s Jackson ‘Stoneleigh’ Griffiths defeated Frankie Srisang by knockout on the main card to claim the WBC Welterweight Interim Title in front of 600 supporters from his home town.
Promoter Brendon Smith was delighted to see Griffiths put on a show at the Pittsworth Town Hall.
“That was our third show there in the last eight months and it was absolutely brilliant,” Smith said.
“The support in the town is incredible and just the way they are getting behind the local champions who are coming through there is amazing.
“Stoneleigh Jackson is a born and bred Pittsworth boy, he is now 12-0 as a pro and moves into the top 40 in the world and also qualifies for the World Youth Championship.
“Stoneleigh loves to fight in his hometown and it meant a lot for him to have such a big title fight in his hometown.”
The win was not easy for Griffiths as he had to fight through an early painful setback before eventually knocking out his opponent.
“Stoneleigh had to work through a bit of adversity, he got quite a bad cut eye, which was caused by a punch in round two or three,” Smith said.
“So he had to step the foot on the pedal and he really pulled on the pace and the fight became quite relentless.
“There was a chance in that fight because of the cut caused by a punch that he could lose on a TKO if the cut got too bad.
“So it was a huge effort by him.”
Goondiwindi’s Jed Morris was another fighter who caught the eye as he knocked-out Japan’s Mao Tomeda.
“He has had a great year, with five fights and five wins and has gone to 5-0 as a pro,” Smith said.
Smith is currently working on an event to be held in Toowoomba on March 16 but after a third-straight sellout at Pittsworth, he will definitely bring further fights to the town.
“We can’t thank the Pittsworth public and supporters enough and that is the reason why we were out there for a third time and will come back again for sure,” he said.
