CYCLING: Physiotherapist Jason Byrnes knows all about the strain and stress sport can place on the human body - he helps his patients overcome those strains every day.
Tomorrow the Toowoomba man, who works as an Advanced Physiotherapist in the Orthopaedic department at Toowoomba Hospital, may be called in to action quicker than usual.
Byrnes will be part of the medical team watching over the mountain bike riders competing in the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
The keen mountain biker, hopes he won't be called into action during the finals on the specially built track around the Nerang State Forest.
"Volunteering at an Olympic or Commonwealth Games has been something I've always wanted to do,” Byrnes said.
"The team I'm part of will be tasked with all the non-emergency related cases. The acute injuries and complaints.
"Hopefully we aren't called into action though.
"I know we'd all rather see the riders get around safely and provide a spectacle for the fans.”
Byrnes expects the racing to be fast and furious around the 10km loop track - the first international standard track to be built in southeast Queensland.
"I've ridden on the track and it's fantastic,” Byrnes said.
"It's a very technical track and I think it's going to really challenge all the riders.”
