SPORT: Plenty of young athletes have excelled in more than one sport.
But few can rival the feats achieved by the latest crop of young stars from Our Lady of Lourdes.
The Toowoomba Catholic school recently added rugby league and netball titles to their trophy cabinet with the same players featuring in both teams.
Despite having very little rugby league experience, the school was crowned under-12 Southern Squad Series champion in the Karyn Murphy Cup before backing that result up with victory in the recent Darling Downs Catholic Schools netball carnival.
School PE teacher Rachel Salisbury put the performances down to good team spirit.
"I think their performances are just a good reflection of their characters,” Salisbury said.
"They are a great bunch of young girls. They're very competitive and they really came together as a team.
"About half of them started playing rugby league for the school last year and the rest of them picked it up this year.
"Most of them played touch football but I think they really enjoy league.”
Salisbury said she wasn't too surprised to see the students take their winning form from the rugby league field to the netball courts.
"The netball team was pretty much the same team we had for rugby league,” she said.
"As a school we make an effort to promote sport and give as many students as possible an opportunity to play it.
"These girls are just really keen. They love to play any sport and that's another reason why they've done so well recently.”
