Preparations for the Jillaroos’ historic test in Las Vegas have been thrown into disarray a month out from the game with a scheduled camp cancelled at the last minute.
Flights and accommodation were booked for players to arrive on the Gold Coast early on Saturday morning before a text message was sent to the group on Friday evening cancelling the event.
The message claimed unforeseen circumstances had arisen, forcing the abrupt call.
The NRL has been contacted for an explanation after a scheduled media event was also abandoned on Sunday.
With just 34 days until the team is due to fly to the US before facing England, the sudden decision to abort preparations hours before players were due to arrive has spooked the playing group.
They have not yet received a full explanation, although have been told more details will be provided early this week.
The camp was set to be the first time the Jillaroos squad assembled after winning the Pacific Cup in November, where they thrashed New Zealand 24-4 in the decider in Sydney.
Their clash with England is the first time the two countries have faced off in a test since the 2017 World Cup, and the first time the NRL has taken a women’s game to the season opener in Vegas.
It’s scheduled for March 2 at Allegiant Stadium.
