Hobbling off court in round 2 earlier this season, Mountaineers small forward Jacob Davis was convinced he had fractured a metatarsal.
Davis, who has broken a bone in his foot before, felt a familiar crunch in his side’s clash with the North Gold Coast Seahawks.
Scans revealed no broken bones but there was soft tissue damage.
“I felt a crunch (in his foot) way back in round 2 against the Seahawks,” Davis said.
“We got scans right after the game and I expected there to be a broken metatarsal because I’ve done that before and it felt just like last time.
“There was nothing broken but there was some soft tissue damage.”
Bought into the Mountaineers squad this season by new coach Sean Connely, Davis was determined to play a key role for his new team and pushed through the pain.
Unfortunately the injury worsened and Davis was sidelined a fortnight ago.
“I did my best to train and play through the pain,” Davis said.
“On top of that I started a new apprenticeship this year which is quite physically demanding and obviously it is a priority also.
“Things got pretty difficult with the injury essentially going up my leg and now I have an inflamed hip labrum.
“There have been times when it got so bad it was a struggle to get in and out bed and walking was painful.”
Having worked extensively with the Mountaineers physio for some time now, Davis is hopeful he can get back on court soon.
“It’s been frustrating because I was brought up here (Toowoomba) to help the team and this is the second season in a row I’ve been sidelined for a significant period by injury,” he said.
“I’ve been doing a fair bit of work with the team physio and it seems to be getting better though.
“Hopefully I can play at least one of the games in our double header this weekend – that’s certainly the goal.
“I’ll be taking part in some non-contact drills this week and that should give me a good idea of where I am at.
“We have a fantastic group of players here, the camaraderie is amazing and we play a style that is only going to get better as the season progresses.
“I really want to be back out on the court and doing my part.”
