As a massive crowd gathered to get an autograph from her son, newly crowned V8 Supercars Championship winner Will Brown, Leanne Brown couldn’t help but smile.
The reality of Will’s title win still hasn’t sunk in for the Toowoomba family, but they are proud all the same.
“It hasn’t sunk in, not completely yet, I’m sure it will,” Leanne said.
“He’s still (the same) Will; it is very exciting though.
“We went to a dinner last night (Saturday) and they were talking about the Supercars champion ... it is amazing to think that’s our son.”
A podium finish in the second last race of the season last Saturday sealed Will’s first ever championship.
A race win the next day was the icing on the cake for the Red Bull Ampol Racing driver, and Will celebrated in style with a few mesmerising burnouts on the Adelaide 500 track.
Leanne said Will’s win was the result of hard work, determination and a focus on recognising and valuing the contribution of every team member.
The 26-year-old has remained humble throughout his professional career – often working at the family business, Cars Galore, between racing commitments.
“He was always a determined child,” Leanne said.
“A huge amount of determination, very competitive; he doesn’t like losing and he was like that as a little boy.
“From his first day at Red Bull he went down to the engineering department and met all the people.
“I think that is a really great quality, to get the best out of the team it’s important to acknowledge everyone and the role they play within the team.
“He has always been very good at that.”
