REEF V RAYS (women)
Four goals in three minutes propelled the Rays to victory over Reef in a high powered women’s clash this morning.
A Britt Wilkinson double - both converted - raised her side to high ground.Rays goalkeeper Sarah Steinhardt should also take a bow for twice preventing Reef goals - by Tatum Stewart and Jade Smith - to single scores.
Class helps in a tight contest and Wilkinson had it is spades.
As her team mates swarmed into an attacking formation on the right side of the the goals, Wilkinson emerged from the pack to push the ball into the back of the goals.
Then, two minutes later, she cut across the front of goals and back handed a shot beyond the keeper’s grasp.
But Reef were not done with.Moreton Bay College alumni and elite Easts junior Smith scored, but Rays were able to prevent another goal.
Earlier, Toowoomba’s Stewart broke the nil-all headline in the second quarter with a nicely taken strike.
Stewart is arguably the best playing on the Darling Downs and one of Queensland finest rising young talents who has senior representative hockey honours written all over her.
Meanwhile, the Stingers men had a 7-3 win over Thunder, with James Easton, Jared Taylor and Liam Hart getting themselves on the score sheet for the winners.
For Thunder, Michael Francis and Bradley Hughes scored.
THUNDER v STINGERS (women)
Stingers wriggled over the top of Thunder 2-nil in a low scoring thriller.
After Samara Johnston opened for scoring for Stingers in the 15th minute, it was even stevens through - with Stingers extending its lead three minutes from fulltime.
Tinesha Carey found the back of the goals, but even then Stingers were not safe.
Earlier, a first class save by Thunder goalie Emily Witheyman-Crump then prevented Stingers increasing their lead following a penalty corner.
Meanwhile, the Rays and Reef men had a ripping encounter, with the Rays skipping to a 2-nil lead in the first quarter Jack Tucker (eighth minute) and elite striker Joel Rintala (12th minute) struck early.
But Diarmid Chappell hit back for his side early in the second quarter and it was game on.
Rays eventually won 5-3, with a Tucker hat-trick and a Rintala double securing victory.
